Add that special touch for your Mum with these homemade Mother's Day gift tags. These tags are also a great grandmother's craft to make for Mother's Day or Grandparent's Day. I have you covered with four different versions including Mom, Mum, Nanny and Granny.
My six-year-old son also helped me out and stitched these gift tags for Mum and the grandmothers. This is also a nice easy craft for children and students to complete.
I have kept the design simple so even if it's not Mother's Day or Grandparent's Day, you could still make these sweet tags to show your appreciation on any day!
I will run through how to make your homemade Mother's Day gift tags below. However, if you just want to grab the download now, scroll to the base of this post where you'll find a big green button with the download link.

Supplies
- Embroidery thread/floss in your choice of colours (I used glitter pink and glitter purple)
- Large sewing needle*
- Scissors
- Scrap cardboard
- White card** similar to 8.5×11 80lb or A4 220gsm
- Paper trimmer (optional)
- Corner paper punch (optional)
- Mother's Day Gift Tag printable (button link at the end of this post)
*I found it better to use a larger needle as it makes the paper piercing much easier.
**It is not imperative that you use the paperweights that I have specified above. However, I do recommend some sort of cardstock or heavy paper. I actually used a lighter weight at 200gsm simply because that's all I had at the time. So don't rush out to buy something new if you already have a card close to the weights.

Creating your homemade Mother's Day gift tags
I'll drop the video to this tutorial below. However, if you enjoy reading words, keep scrolling for how I made my gift tags. Remember you will find the green download button at the end of this post, you can grab your printable there!

Step #1: Paper piercing your cards
Once you have downloaded and printed Mother's Day gift tag template, the first step is to prick the paper with a needle. Place a piece of cardboard underneath your printout and begin poking holes in the grey outlines. You can make these as close or far apart as you like. If children are making this craft, it might be easier for them if you pierce the holes further apart.

Step #2: Cut your gift tags
Once you have finished paper piercing you can now cut your cards out. I did this with a paper trimmer however scissors will do just fine too. If you like the rounded edges you can trim these with scissors or a corner paper punch.

Step #3: Stitching your Mother's Day gift tags
Now comes the fun part! Using a simple backstitch I followed the paper-piercing outlines to create my hearts. You can stick strictly to the outlines or create your own patterns and even fill them if you like.

Summing Up: Homemade Mother's Day gift tags
Once you've finished your tags you can gift them! I like to punch a hole in mine to attach to a gift.
I hope you enjoy making this sweet craft for your Mum, Nanny or Granny. These tags are great on a gift or as an appreciation gift. But you don't need to limit your creativity there. You can add your own flair to this template by decorating them with other craft embellishments and mediums such as sequins, paper, paint etc. I'm thinking maybe a nice pattern of sequins inside the heart would be awesome! You could even write your own message on the front or cover the back with a patterned paper including your message.
If you want to use your gift tags as an appreciation gift, you could place them in a hidden place to surprise your Mum or grandmother. Somewhere she goes regularly but won't be expecting to find something like this. Perhaps her lunch box, pillow, kitchen drawer, workspace etc.
