Surprise Mom (or Mum) with this Mother's Day gift tags free printable. An easy Mother's Day craft for kids to stitch, the gift tags come in “Mum”, “Mom”, “Nanny” and “Granny” versions. We don't want to forget our amazing grandmothers!
Some adult assistance is required to pierce the card and possibly during the stitching process. This is a nice simple craft for kids to make with minimal supplies.

Supplies
- Wool/yarn in your choice of colours
- Large Metal sewing needle
- Children's sewing needle
- Scissors
- Scrap cardboard
- White card* similar to 8.5×11 80lb or A4 220gsm
- Paper trimmer (optional)
- Corner paper punch (optional)
- Mother's Day Gift Tag printable (button link at the end of this post)
*It is not imperative that you use the paperweights that I have specified above. However, I do recommend some sort of cardstock or heavy paper. I actually used a lighter weight at 200gsm simply because that's all I had at the time. So don't rush out to buy something new if you already have a card close to the weights.

Making your Mother's Day gift tags
I also made these gift tags myself using embroidering thread. You can check out the post on my Handmade Mother's Day gift tags and also view the video I recorded below. I am using the same tag template, just a different thread.

Step #1: Pierce holes into your cards
Once you have downloaded and printed your gift tag printable (link at the end of this post), the first step is to prick the paper with a needle. Place a piece of cardboard beneath your printout. Using the metal sewing needle, begin poking holes in the grey heart outline. You can make these as close or far apart as you like (see notes about that below).
I made these cards and stitched them myself using embroidery thread. For children, however, you will need to ensure your holes are pierced at a reasonable distance apart. As you can see from the close-up below, the spacing I used with the metal needle initially wasn't good enough. I skipped a few of these with the large kid's needle, making it much easier and less likely to tear. The convenience of this craft is that once my son stitched over the smaller original holes, you couldn't even see them – winning!
Once you have finished piercing with the sharper metal needle, I found it best to use the thicker children's needle to go over these holes. The holes need to be large enough for the kid's needle to go through but given it's not very sharp, I used a regular sewing needle first to create the holes.
Step #2: Cut your Mother's Day gift tags out
After the piercing is complete, cut your tags out. This can be done with a paper trimmer/guillotine or simply with scissors. I rounded the edges of the cards with a corner paper punch however again, you could use scissors for this step.

Step #3: Stitching your cards
Now comes the fun part! Thread a piece of yarn through the large plastic needle, tie a knot in the end. Now have the kids stitch around, following the heart outline. They may need some guidance from you depending on their skill level. You can stick strictly to the outlines and even fill them if you like.

Mother's Day gift tags free printable craft
I hope your children (or students) enjoy making this sweet craft for their Mum. I've thought of a couple of uses these gift tags that would be great for:
- Gift tags on a present
- Gifting to someone just to tell them they're appreciated
- Adding your own flair by decorating them with craft embellishments such as sequins, stickers, collage paper etc.
- Surprise Mum, Mom, Nanny or Granny by placing a tag in a place she'll least expect to find (lunch box, pillow, kitchen drawer etc)
- Any of the above to celebrate Grandparent's Day!
