What is Crazy Hair Day?
Crazy Hair Day has been a fun event implemented by groups and charities. Some include raising awareness for Alopecia Areata, fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis as well as Literacy Campaigns for schools and communities.
This concept is such a fun craze that many other schools, charities, and community groups host their own Crazy Hair Day events to raise money and awareness.
How to Make Crazy Hair (Supplies)
When you come across these brilliant Wacky Hair Day ideas, many of them don’t have instructions and it just seems difficult to figure out how on earth these works of art came to be!
I will go through and provide some suggestions for the styles as I list them further below. I have also provided common supplies parents use below. These may prompt you with your creations!
- Glitter hairspray
- Colored hair extension clips
- Regular hair gel
- Hairspray
- Pipe cleaners
- Ribbons and bows
- Paper/Cardboard
- Googly Eyes
- Foam Shapes
- Any type of embellishment
I have heard of people using all sorts of things to adhere elements to their kid’s hair. I have to admit I’m a little hesitant. I would love to hear from anyone who has come up with some tricks.
For small items, you might be able to use Elmer’s craft glue or eyelash glue. I have no idea how this washes out, particularly with longer hair.
Try these things at your own risk and remember that experimenting with adhesives may not be a good idea for those with sensitive skin.
Fun Crazy Hair Day Ideas
Bath Tub Soap Suds
This cool soap suds hairdo would work for short or long hair. Use exfoliator puffs or weave blue hair clip-ins. The rubber ducky and cotton wool bubbles are just the cutest!

Disco Ball Crown
I know so many kids who would love this, my son, especially! Even better, you don’t need to make it as you can purchase the Disco Ball Crown from GiselAndTheFish (Etsy).

Painter’s Palette
Older kids can help create this masterpiece. Paint a cardboard palette and assemble with paintbrushes into a large bun.

Pipe Cleaner Squiggles
Here’s an easy Crazy Hair Day idea. You can also use up a heap of those pipe cleaners you have lying around! Add some sparkle with a glitter spray.

Crayon & Paintbrush Crown
The perfect wacky hair for a teacher! I know plenty of little girls who would love this too. With a hot glue gun, you could attach all of the elements to a headband.

Food Crazy Hair Day Ideas
Hair Noodles
Cut a hole in the base of the noodle cup then thread a curly high ponytail through. Add some chopsticks and it’s as simple as that!

Bowl of Noodles
Here’s a fun one for the boys or those with short hair. I would suggest gluing noodles to the inside of the bowl and try using a pipe cleaner to suspend the flavor sachet. I would then adhere the bowl to a headband.

Froot Loops Cereal Hair
You could use this as inspiration for any cereal. It’s so cute, I love the colored hair elastics used as Froot Loops (or you could use the real thing!).

Ice Cream Sundae Cup
All lovers of sundaes (basically any child right?!). Cut a hole in the cup, thread a ponytail, and tie it in a bun. The cherry is made from a pom pom and pipe cleaner which you should be able to attach to a clip or bobby pin. If the sprinkles don’t stay, try some hair glue or perhaps some hairspray. They might adhere even with a little hairspray.

Popcorn Hair
Create your popcorn container then tie up hair, securing a ponytail inside the container. This would also work for boys or short hair by attaching the popcorn to a hair clip.

Cupcake Hair
Cut holes in cupcake liners, pull ponytails through, and put them into buns. Add pom poms as cherries (you might be able to wrap them around a bobby pin to secure them). Cut gift ribbon for the sprinkles. I’ve heard people have used Elmer’s craft glue or even eyelash glue for these types of things.

Cupcake Headband
If you want something easy then look no further than this headband! You can purchase it from Cupcake Headband from PinkandBright (Etsy).

Cotton Candy Headband
I love the sprinkles and glitter on this cotton candy. You can purchase this Cotton Candy Headband from MySweetBoutiqueLLC (Etsy).

Character Crazy Hair Day Ideas
Poop Emoji Hair
All the kids will want a poop in their hair! This would be an easy Crazy Hair Day idea to recreate. Use hair elastics and donuts to create the poop. Then add some cute paper eyes and mouth. You will find the full tutorial in the link below!

Rapunzel Hair Tower
Spray a little green hair color around the base of the hair. You can have your child create their tower from a cardboard roll. To attach, pull a high ponytail through the tower and secure the base with bobby pins.

Cookie Monster Headband
This cute headband would be easy to make using a cardboard cookie and ping-pong ball eyes.

Ballerina Bun
Use a printout of a ballerina. Then put hair in a bun and add some pretty ties, ribbons, and ric-rac to create the tutu of your ballerina.

Minions
I made Stuart the Minion hair for my son. You can read the full tutorial on how to make your own Minion crazy hair here.

Trolls Hair
Hair color, a lot of hair spray, and teasing – this one is another easy wacky hair day idea. You can create height by rolling a paper cone to layer the hair around.

Trolls Headband
If you’re short on time to create a fancy hairdo in the morning (but are still planning ahead!) you can purchase these handmade Trolls headbands from nytmcrafts.

Lego Minifigs Hair
This is about as easy as it comes for a boy’s Crazy Day hair idea. I used Genevieve’s suggestion to simply clip the Lego pieces into the hair for my son’s Soccer Field crazy hair. This saves on glue or trying to attach to hair clips. See the link below the image for more.

Minecraft Creeper
This simple wacky hair day idea requires colored hair spray (or dye) and a stencil. If your child’s hair is darker, you could just leave the black areas blank.

Pokemon Hair
Color hair with green dye, chalk, or wax. I’m not sure how they attached the Pokemon toys to the hair. You could try wig glue or glue gun them to some clips.

Green Monster Hair
Create a big mess of hair, spray it green, and add in a couple of paper/cardboard face elements. You could adjust this to look like Minion crazy hair too (or check out my son’s Minion hair project).

Unicorn Headband
How sweet is this… I love the flowers too. You can purchase a Unicorn Headband from PinkandBright (Etsy).

Alien Balloons
If you (or someone you know) can create balloon characters then the possibilities are endless with balloons.

Star Wars BB8
A Star Wars one for the girls! I love this creative BB8 bun. Made with white and orange color then a couple of embellishments attached.

Outdoor & Plant Crazy Hair Day Ideas
Rainbow Pipe Cleaner Squiggles
Who doesn’t love rainbows?! Use a rainbow clip in hair extension then get creative with two buns/plaits. Add some funky-shaped pipe cleaners!

Golf Tee
If only my boys would be okay with me adding a hair donut to their head for this one! The green glitter grass is gorgeous. You will need to glue gun a golf ball to a tee. I’m not sure how it sits securely within the bun. Perhaps you could wrap a pipe cleaner around it (hidden in the bun) then twist the pipe cleaner into the hair.

Soccer/Football Field
My son loves soccer so I had to create this crazy hair day idea for him. I found the net at my local stationery store – it’s part of a keyboard game! I used pipe cleaners to attach it to his head. I then attached the Lego figurines by clipping them to the hair.

Lawnmower Hair
What a cute idea! Dye hair green for grass, then attach the mower using hair glue or attach it to a hair clip.

Island Palm Tree
I love the creativity of this tropical crazy hair day idea! If you can’t find ocean hair clips, you can easily make your own. Get the full tutorial at the link below the image.

Fairy House Crazy Hair
I would imagine you’d need to create a paper cylinder to wrap the hair around, securing foliage, fairies, and other elements to the hair. I would love this! The perfect touch is the battery-operated fairy lights of course.

Cactus Plant Crazy Hair
This cute hairstyle was made with paper cutouts and rounded toothpicks for the cactus spikes. You can get the full tutorial at the link below the image.

Dump Truck Boulders
My eldest son would have loved this a couple of years ago! He was crazy about construction when he was younger. It reminds me of a cake I made with Malteasers! It looks like the dump truck is attached to a clip of sorts. I’d say the pom poms are then adhered to the boy’s head.

Pumpkin Buns
This is so cute! I love the touch of foliage around the base of the pumpkins. You could also choose this hairstyle with just one bun. Get the specifics for this at the link below the image.

Animal Crazy Hair Day Ideas
DIY Dino Head
This idea is a perfect crazy hair day idea for the last minute. It’s such an easy craft with a few simple supplies. You’ll find the tutorial at the link below the image.

Dinosaur Scene
If your child has a lot of hair, this is a good one particularly if you can spike it up. Attach the dinosaurs to green hair using clips or hair glue.

Shark Head
It looks like this could be a rubber hand puppet. Dye hair blue to represent the ocean and attach to the hair with a clip. This is a great idea that you can take and use for other animals and anything you find in puppets!

Lego Shark in Waves
This has to be one of my favorite Crazy Hair Day ideas for boys. You can use one color in the hair or two different types of blue for added visual interest. Use hair glue or clips to attach the Lego shark to the waves.

Pink Flamingo
Make a cardboard flamingo head, then use pink clip-in hair extensions to create your flamingo!

Octopus Hair
Weave brightly colored hair extensions through braids and the bun on top for your Octopus. Then attach some paper or googly eyes for cuteness.

Googly Eyed Spider
Need a crazy hair idea at the last minute? This is perfect with some pipe cleaners and googly eyes. Find the details at the link below the image.

Insect & Bug Hair
I totally forgot about these crazy hair ideas that I made for my kids. I used a spray hair color. Given they have such dark hair, I now prefer to use a wax or temporary dye. I used my glue gun to attach the bugs to hair clips, then clipped them into their hair.

Birds Nest Bun
This style is so sweet. Wrap foliate around the bun and stick a bird on the top. It reminds me of those Christmas clip decorations (you could use one of those!) or glue with a glue gun to a clip.

Beehive Crazy Hair
This is spectacular! Don’t worry, avalon.renegade breaks down how she did in a video tutorial for the Beehive Crazy Hair.

I hope you found some inspiration for Crazy Hair Day ideas for school, work, fundraising, or any other reason!
