17 Fixer Upper Modern Farmhouse Kitchens to Make Your Own

Chip and Joanna Gaines' Fixer Upper series may have come to an end but the contemporary farmhouse style they're famous for is far from ending. I've compiled a roundup based on the heart of the home – modern farmhouse kitchens.

You'll notice common elements such as timber floors, large island benches, a range, open shelving, stools, wire baskets and pendant lighting. By far my most favourite aspect of this style are the natural elements that are bought in – timber, brickwork and flowers or plants.

#1 | GLAM MODERN FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

Our first kitchen has a touch of glamour to it – the gold fixtures and classic tapware along with the grey cabinets and curved lines of the range hood. Some of the features that make this a modern farmhouse kitchen include the classic subway tiles, the detail in the cabinetry, the farmhouse sink and open shelving.

#2 | WHITE, LIGHT & BRIGHT KITCHEN

The kitchen in this gorgeous Westport home is light, bright and airy. I love the dimension of the profile on the cabinets and of course that large island bench. The slightly industrial pendants ground the room by bringing in a touch of black and adding some charm. The dark flooring and a hint of natural material in the wicker stools add warmth.

#3 | SOARING CEILINGS, FIREPLACE ANYONE?

Wouldn't a fireplace in the kitchen be amazing?! I like that the brick of the fireplace is painted, adding more texture and cosiness to the room. Of course, you can't go past the exceptional island bench and overhead pendants. This kitchen overall feels very warm and inviting.

#4 | TIMBER FEATURE WALL

This next one has been one of my favourites since I first saw it on Instagram quite some time ago. The timber feature wall ties in nicely with the floor, shelving and range hood. Even the metal finishes under the shelving seem to just blend effortlessly. The pendants offer a little glam and sophistication. An absolute stunner for me!

#5 | GREEN KITCHEN WITH FARMHOUSE SINK

A farmhouse sink is a must in every farmhouse style kitchen. But it's not just about the sink, rather everything that compliments it – the marble bench top and the gold gooseneck tap is gorgeous. It ties in the cute overhead pendant and other metallic fixtures within the room. With plenty of natural light, this is a feel-good space and I love the use of the deep green, not a colour many people are bold enough to use on their kitchen cabinets!

#6 | FRENCH CHIC HOME WITH INDUSTRIAL TWIST

I've been dreaming of a brick wall backsplash… maybe one day?! I love the shape and detail of the range hood and the fact that it's a different colour to the black overhead cupboards. Black can be a daunting colour to use a room but it really grounds this room and prevents it from being wishy-washy. The cabinets are tied in with the tapware and lighting over the bench top.

#7 | TOUCH OF VINTAGE MODERN FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

I love the slight vintage feel in this room – the pendant, the timber stool and the rug (I always love an unexpected vintage rug!). The features include classic subway tile with more elegant tapware. What I like most about this kitchen is the cabinetry – their super tall height that blends with the moulding, their profile, the pretty sage green colour and those cute little drawers that simply wouldn't work as well if they didn't have the pretty little brass handles.

#8 | CASUALLY FORMAL FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

Designed with gold marble countertops, designer Mark Kennamer notes this kitchen as being “a very formal kitchen that emits a casual vibe”. The gorgeous herringbone pattern brick splash back and character timber beams help to achieve this. It's nice to see upholstered bar stools (lending to the formality), just don't let my kids eat their breakfast at them!

#9 | SHIPLAP INDUSTRIAL FARMHOUSE KITCHEN

What farmhouse roundup would be complete without a Chip & Joanna Gaines reference?! This particular house is known as the Colossal Crawford Reno. The vaulted ceiling opens up the space and you can't ignore the suspended open shelving that helps to give it that industrial vibe. Gorgeous and practical to have over the island too.

#10 | TIMBER CHARM WITH DISTRESSED TEAL CUSTOM CABINETS

This kitchen is definitely more true to the farmhouse style than modern. The beautiful big old features from the industrial pendants to the beautiful pantry grounding the centre of the room. The timber accents work beautifully together. There are quite a few once you start looking – the pantry, the range trim, open shelving, stools, flooring, island and the contrasting sink cabinet is very unique.

#11 | BLENDED OLD & NEW

With a slight country touch, this kitchen has gorgeous big ceilings and plenty of light. This helps with the use of the dramatic navy blue cabinetry and those beautiful big old pendants really tell a story. The open shelving and hanging pans are a classic farmhouse look.

#12 | TOUCH OF RUSTIC WITH PRETTY BLUE CABINETS

The brief for this kitchen was to create a rustic industrial farmhouse kitchen. The standout features include it's fresh white subway tiles, brass tapware with brass accents and feature pendants. The butcher block island bench adds some warmth along with the typical loveable farmhouse charm. My favourite part of this kitchen is definitely the blue chosen for the cabinets – it really makes the room for me.

#13 | COUNTRY FRENCH CHIC KITCHEN

A little French chic, the timber beams in this kitchen really add to the farmhouse feel. With gorgeous large windows letting in an abundance of light it just makes this room feel lighter and brighter. A great contrast to the splashes of timber.

#14 | RUSTIC CHARMER

This kitchen snippet has a lot of natural elements. The use of the black accents helps to ground everything. I love these open shelves with the black brackets and the colour chosen for the cupboards.

#15 | CLASSIC OPEN SHELVING WITH WALNUT BUTCHER BLOCK

Front and centre to this kitchen is the open shelving and gorgeous “gather” sign. I quite like the shiplap walls and walnut butcher block island. It has been decorated nicely with the wreath, large clock and upholstered stools. The natural light that filters through adds to the overall feel of this kitchen.

#16 | BLACK & WHITE GLAM KITCHEN

Woah! Where do I start with this one? I had a hard time choosing just one feature to mention in the headline above! Shiplap walls, marble benchtops, open timber shelving… those pendants. The mix of white cabinetry (and the door profile) with the black shaker lower cabinets is a gorgeous contrast. And did I mention that range hood? Black and white kitchens don't usually appeal to me personally but this is done so well, every detail carefully considered I think it might just be my favourite! But do I have to pick just one?!

#17 | TIMBER BEAMS WITH BRASS ACCENTS

Okay so to confess, it does look like the metallics are mixed (not always a bad thing!), perhaps some gold and brass. The geometric, metallic pendants are very unique with the metallic finishes extending out to border frame the windows. What also caught my eye was the smooth dark timber over the navy blue cabinetry. It's somewhat of a modern touch but goes really nicely with the rustic beams. On a practical side, I really like a kitchen that includes a little workstation since most of us are using our tech in the main living areas.
