If you’re looking for an easy Mario and Luigi costume DIY then look no further! The year my eldest turned 7 he had a Super Mario Birthday party.
The very same day however was also Halloween. So I absolutely needed a costume that was easy to pull together with little fuss. It seemed fitting to extend the Super Mario theme over to the costumes for my two boys.
So the title of this post is that this is a costume for brothers. But don’t let that fool you, it can extend to all siblings, couples, best friends and adults.
Simply adjust it to suit your style. For example, if you’re making these for teen girls, they might want skirts or tutus with singlets or something similar.
The key to a simple and easy Mario and Luigi costume DIY is in selecting the correct colours! The other specifics can all change.
Below I’ll give you a quick run down on what I used to make my kid’s simple Mario and Luigi costume DIY.

Can’t DIY your Mario + Luigi costumes?
I hear you, sometimes creating a costume from scratch just isn’t on the cards. If you’re not able to make your own, I have found a great range of Mario costumes and accessories and Luigi costumes and accessories that you can purchase.

- x1 Plain green t-shirt*

- x1 Plain red t-shirt*
- x2 Blue suspenders
- x2 Blue denim shorts (or similar)
- x2 Pairs of plain white shoes
- White felt
- Spray adhesive
- Scissors
- Pen/Marker
As I mentioned above, matching the right colours was the most important part. Unfortunately, the year I made these costumes, Luigi Green and Mario Red were not popular colours in department stores!
It would have been easy if I could find them there but it was not to be that year. I needed to research prior and order them online.
This was probably the most difficult part of this Mario and Luigi costume DIY. And really only because I had to think ahead of time to source them (it usually takes weeks for these things to arrive in my part of the world).
*Having trouble sourcing the right colours in both the t-shirts and hats (and the links above don’t help)? You can try a wholesaler of blank clothing that will supply to the public.
If you’re in Australia, I can recommend Blank Clothing. They do sell internationally although be sure to check shipping rates first.
Mario and Luigi costume DIY Hats
Making the hats for Mario and Luigi is really the only crafty part of this costume. I used the white felt to put the ‘M’ and ‘L’ letters on the kid’s hats.
Using a glass, trace and cut out two circles from the white felt. In the centre of the circles, you will need to draw your letters and then cut them out.
If you’re not too confident about getting the letters right, you can print them out onto a piece of paper to use as a template.
As long as your felt isn’t too thick you should be able to see through it. You can even go one step further and download the free for personal use Super Mario 256 font.
Once you have your felt letters, simply use the spray adhesive to attach them to each hat.

Bringing your easy Mario and Luigi costume together
Here comes the simple part! Dress your kiddos in their plain t-shirts and shorts, attach their suspenders and put on their hats.
Instant Mario and Luigi! The white shoes aren’t necessary but I managed to find white canvas shoes at Big W for only $3 so that was easy.
My mum was going to the craft store so I asked her to pick up the suspenders. Whilst she was there she called and asked if I wanted plain blue ones or sequins.
Naturally, I replied… sequins! My boys were too young to be fussed by a little sparkle and they loved them.
That’s all there is to this easy Mario and Luigi costume DIY! Given all the party preparations I had with my son’s 7th Birthday Super Mario celebrations, I didn’t take any in-progress shots of these costumes.
However, once you have the tees and hat supplied, they really are an easy costume to bring together.
I love it when both of my boys match their costumes. Sadly, they’re not really into that anymore. I’d love to know what matching Halloween costumes you’ve come up with for your kids. Let me know in the comments below!
