It finally happened – after years of decorating for Halloween, I finally threw my son a Halloween birthday party!
I honestly can’t believe he’s turning eleven (on November 2nd, no less!), and this was the first time I’ve embraced the spooky vibes for his birthday celebration.
Part of me feels a little like I’ve missed out on some really cute Halloween birthday party ideas!
But now we’ve finally arrived, and he’s that little bit older, so I needed to come up with something that was a little spooky but not cute spooky.
With a handful of brave cousins, family lunch guests, and a house still full of moving boxes, I threw together a delightfully spooky but not-too-cute celebration quickly and simply.

Halloween Party Decorations
My absolute favorite thing about this party theme is that I can save money (and party brain fatigue!) by simply using the Halloween decorations we usually decorate the inside and outside of the house with.
We have a life-size toy skeleton that usually loves to dress up and hang out on our front porch during the spooky season. He stood to one corner of the party table.
Hanging above him, on the wall, I had a big furry black spider. And on the floor, I put some more decor – a tinsel black cat and a plastic pumpkin.
In the middle of the wall, I hung a themed banner with my son’s name. It was all so easy to create some fun Halloween party decor.

Spooky Balloon Garland
You’ll see I also made a balloon garland.
This is probably about the 4th one I’ve made, and I still can’t get over how easy they are to make! You really need to give it a go sometime.
I used a mix of green, black, and white balloons. I didn’t have any in different sizes on hand.
This party had to come together quickly, as we had just moved house and there were still boxes everywhere.
Not to mention, many of my party supplies were still packed in said boxes!

My absolute life-saver when it comes to garlands is definitely using an electric balloon pump.
They’re relatively inexpensive, and if you’re likely to use it a couple of times, it’s totally worth investing in one.
I like to use fishing line to tie my balloons together. I hung the finished garland up on the wall with some removable hooks.
If you want more ideas on how to hang party decorations, I put together some of my favorite ways to do this in my article helpful tips for hanging decorations to walls and more.
Once I hung my Halloween balloon garland, I added some extra spook with some white stretchy cobwebs.
I had a heap of these in my Halloween decorations box from last year.
I love stretching these across my trees and bushes, so I always buy them for a steal in the after-sales!

Dressing The Halloween Buffet
Now for dressing the Halloween buffet!
As we didn’t have too many people (and most of them were grown or almost-grown adults), I focused on the decor for impact. You’ll notice I didn’t go too far with the party food and treats.
First, I layered the buffet table with more of the stretchy white cobwebs.
Over the top of that I placed a black chiffon runner that had cobwebs printed on it. I bought this really cheap from a discount store.
The previous year, I bought some foam gravestones for the front lawn. I used these the add some dimension to the party table. These came after layering the table with the runner.

I then placed some of my favorite food stands along with a grass mat. The stands will be for the food and help to add height and interest to the buffet.
Next came a small framed sign, “No Tricks Just Treats”. I sprinkled a few smaller Halloween decor items – a spider and some small plastic skeleton figures.
I color-coordinated the food as much as I could – black licorice twists, green candy-coated chocolate balls, and these freakishly cute black and green severed finger lolly-pops on sticks.
The cupcakes weren’t anything fancy and didn’t even coordinate with the color scheme (aside from the cases they were in). But I used some cute decor to dress them up.
I customized some cupcake toppers with Campbell’s name and age. Some of the toppers had some creepy Halloween elements and characters.

Halloween Printables
These spooky vintage Halloween printables I designed are perfect for older kids or even an adult Halloween party.
You can edit the banner and cupcake toppers with your own details for that extra personalization that will bring your Halloween birthday party together.
Since these party printables don’t use color, your ink usage will be lower. Of course, with editable printables, you can change the color of the text if you want to add some!
I’m so used to using color that I really had to stop myself from adding just a touch of green before printing them.
For this party, I used:
- Editable Spooky Halloween Invitation
- Editable Spooky Halloween Banner
- Editable Spooky Halloween Table Sign (I used the smaller 5×7 size)
- Editable Spooky Halloween Cupcake Toppers
- Graphic As-Is Spooky Halloween Cupcake Toppers
You can also add some more fun to your party with my printable Halloween activity mat or some spooky fun Halloween photo props.

Party Food
We had about 20 family members at our party, most of them adults. But I had to include some fun Halloween themed food for lunch too!
My partner helped me make some Mummy mini pizzas and severed finger mini hotdogs. The kids loved them!
We did have some more food for lunch like sandwiches and other “boring” everyday adult finger food!
