For my festive craft this year, I decided on these DIY Christmas tree crafts to add to my pink and gold colour theme. We all have plenty of decorations that we don't end up using (at least I hope that's not just me?!). These trees are great for using up those supplies.
I did, however, go and buy a few items… don't you just hate buyer's remorse? When buying these styrofoam cones, I couldn't find the sizes I wanted. I went to the craft store a couple of times, I looked online to find which stores might have them, I initially turned my nose up at the Christmas tree shaped ones. But I made it work. Then… once I'd created them, I Googled styrofoam crafts and right there was exactly what I wanted from KMart for only $3.
Facepalm moment… I could have easily saved myself $20-$30. Not to mention the runaround. You have to love KMart though, don't you?! Although I do have to say that I really like those Christmas tree foam shapes that I ended up using anyway. So if you have to buy yourself some, be sure to shop around. Being a crafter is expensive enough right?!

The short of it…
For this DIY I basically put together a bunch of supplies and just thought I'd see where it would take me. You might notice some items from the original image I actually didn't end up using. In this post I'll run through creating:
- Gold tinsel styrofoam Christmas tree
- Pink tinsel styrofoam Christmas tree
- Beaded garland pink styrofoam Christmas tree
- Beaded garland red styrofoam Christmas tree with gold baubles
SUPPLIES FOR ALL TREES
- 2 Styrofoam cones 35cm
- Gold tinsel – approximately 2m for a 35cm cone
- Pink tinsel – approximately 2m for a 35cm cone
- 1 Pink star decoration
- 1 Styrofoam Christmas tree 26cm
- Pink beaded garland – approximately 12m for 26cm foam tree
- 1 Styrofoam cone 20cm
- Red beaded garland – approximately 6m for 20cm cone
- Gold glitter foam bauble fillers
- 3 Small paper star cake toppers
Gold Tinsel DIY Christmas Tree Craft
I used the following items for this tree craft:
- Approximately 2m of gold tinsel
- 35cm styrofoam cone
- Small paper star cake topper
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Dab glue on the base of your cone to begin laying your tinsel. As you go around the cone, splay the tinsel fringing to avoid getting too much stuck in the glue or under the previous layer. I added glue dots as I went up the cone to secure. However you don't need to glue the entire tinsel, I think that might just end up being one big tinsel-y glue mess.
Once done, simply insert the cake topper stick into the foam top. Trim the end of the stick beforehand if need be.
Pink Tinsel DIY Christmas Tree Craft
I used the following items for this tree craft:
- Approximately 2m of pink tinsel
- 35cm styrofoam cone
- Pink glitter star tree decoration
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
As this is very similar to the gold tinsel tree, you might want to refer to those images also. Begin by dabbing glue on the base of your cone to begin laying your tinsel. As you go around the cone, splay the tinsel fringing to avoid getting too much stuck in the glue or under the previous layer. I added glue dots as I went up the cone to secure. However you don't need to glue the entire tinsel, I think that might just end up being one big tinsel-y glue mess.
For the star topper, I used one of my favourite Christmas decorations. If I had them in gold I would have used those for the rest of the trees too! Try inserting into the top of the foam tree. You may need to fix it with a small amount of glue to prevent it from wobbling or falling out (especially if you have small kiddy hands about the house who like to touch everything!).
Pink Beaded Garland DIY Christmas Tree Craft
I used the following items for this tree craft:
- Approximately 12m of pink beaded garland
- 26cm styrofoam Christmas tree
- Small paper star cake topper
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Start by dabbing glue on the base of your cone to begin laying your garland. You will need to try to get the garland as close to the base edge and keep it as straight as possible. For this tree, I added glue most of the way around the tree. For parts, I would glue a few centimetres then leave a few whilst running the garland up the tree. As you go, keep checking the beading is sitting firmly and straight along the previous row. It's easy enough just to push this down as you go before the glue sets properly.
To keep the true shape of the Christmas tree, at each of the foam layers I would finish and cut. Then start again at the base of the next layer.
As you get toward the top of the foam tree, stop approximately 1-2cm to insert the cake topper stick. Trim the end of the stick beforehand if need be. I found that doing this at the very end can be a little awkward with all of the glue everywhere. Now continue on and finish the garland and trim at the top.
Red Beaded Garland DIY Christmas Tree Craft
I used the following items for this tree craft:
- Approximately 6m of red beaded garland
- 20cm styrofoam cone
- Gold glitter foam bauble fillers
- Small paper star cake topper
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
As this is very similar to the pink beaded garland tree, you might want to refer to those images also. Start by dabbing glue on the base of your cone to begin laying your garland. You will need to try to get the garland as close to the base edge and keep it as straight as possible.
For this tree, I added glue most of the way around the tree. For parts, I would glue a few centimetres then leave a few whilst running the garland up the tree. For the finishing touch use a small amount of glue to dab onto the gold balls and evenly space them around your tree.
Now to add your crafty festivity to a Christmas display
What does one do when they don't have an Instagram worthy fireplace to create a beautiful Christmas display? Well, you work with what you have. I've decorated my old IKEA side table, you almost can't tell how old and horrible it is under all of that festivity! I really would love a new one. Or just a fireplace (please and thank you Santa).
For the last 3 years, my Christmas has always had some next-level hectic to it that didn't allow me to just submerge myself into it. The first 2 years I was on my own with the kids and moving house, both years within 3 days of Christmas. Last year I had a kitchen renovation until mid-December (that one I was a little happier about!). So I'm really excited this year to be getting out my 17-year-old tree and all the trimmings and decor. I just don't see trees like I have anymore, I hope she lasts for a long time to come yet. Either that or perhaps it will be a good excuse to try a real one.
I love the pink colour scheme for Christmas. In fact, I normally change each year but I just cannot with this one! I love the blush colour and a touch of rose gold also.
