Looking for quick and easy last minute Elf on the Shelf ideas because you forgot (again)?
I have spoken to so many friends who all agree… having to constantly come up with new creative Elf on the Shelf scenarios often adds to the stress of Christmas!
Remembering to do it every night can be a struggle, but having to also make it magical?!
Why don’t we just go back to where it all started for a sec?
You think this will be great. Let’s start a fun little tradition with the kids.
Only now you have to follow through with that tradition every year until… until the children have THAT realization.
I really can’t even type what THAT is. I can’t put IT out into the world and on the internet. THAT famous Christmas children’s realization might jinx me if I do.
I’m sure you know what I mean. And hey, kids are smart, I’m sure they’ll drag this Elf reporting to Santa thing out as long as they can.
At least a few more years than necessary.
Does that sound familiar? I actually love having that cheeky little character come back. Crazy huh? But yeah… I’m with you, it can get long in the tooth.

What Even is Elf on the Shelf?
If you’re new here, welcome to the magical (and sometimes mildly stressful) world of Elfing.
The idea is simple: Santa sends an elf to your home each December to keep an eye on the kids and report back every night.
By morning, your elf reappears somewhere new – sometimes funny, sometimes cheeky, and always guaranteed to keep the kids guessing.
The rules are simple too:
- Don’t touch the elf! It makes them lose their magic.
- Elves head back to the North Pole after Christmas (to help Santa and to give parents a much-needed break).
After that? You get to make your own family spin on the tradition. Honestly, that’s half the fun!”
As stated in the official Elf Guidelines, not every elf is the same, and they may not always return at the same time every year. Phew. They really saved my skin on that one!
My kids have seen their Elf in a box in the garage. I just tell them that his magic doesn’t work until Christmas. They seem good with that!

Easy Elf on the Shelf Goodbye with Candy

Our Elf got into the pantry overnight and made a mess making some microwave popcorn – it went everywhere.

Last Minute Elf on the Shelf Ideas With Everyday Items
Elf Sits on a Shelf
Sometimes the elf just… sits on a shelf. Groundbreaking stuff, I know. Steve and Sundee must have been as tired as I was that night!
It might not impress the older kids, but if you’re looking for super easy Elf on the Shelf ideas, this one truly could not be simpler.

Boobie Trap Bra
Oops, this one is a little bit cheeky! Pop your elf into a bra and you’ve got a very literal “boobie trap” that little ones will probably find hilarious.
Older kiddos may reward you with a dramatic eye roll, but as far as lazy Elf on the Shelf ideas go, it’s quick, silly and requires basically zero brainpower. A December win, if you ask me.

Toilet Humor
When the elves raid the bathroom, you know mischief is coming. Scribble a silly joke on the toilet roll and perch your elves nearby for maximum giggles.
It’s one of the easiest DIY elf on the shelf ideas and guarantees laughs at morning roll call.
Supplies Needed: Toilet paper roll and marker

Laundry Line Shenanigans
Elf meets laundry day! What household with children doesn’t always have mountains of laundry?!
Peg your elves up on the clothesline, hammock-style, and let the kids find them hanging out in the fresh air.
Supplies Needed: Clean washing and clothesline (indoor or outdoor)

Clean and Confused
Your Elf on the Shelf is looking a little clean and confused! They must have accidentally hopped into the washing machine and gotten a surprise bath.
Luckily, they left a “Help!” sign so you can rescue them (you can download this one for free from my printable elf accessory kit).
Supplies Needed: Washing machine and printable sign or handwritten sign

Stinky Elf Surprise
Our Elf has gotten himself into a stinky predicament. He’s trapped himself in a jar with his own fart and left a sign that reads, “Don’t open!” to warn you.
I can’t believe he’s actually enjoying this! You can, of course, download this sign from my free printable Elf on the Shelf antics kit.
Supplies Needed: Jar and printable sign or handwritten sign

Elf Pulling Down Christmas Tree Star (Arrival Idea)
Okay, so a Christmas tree star is only an everyday item during Christmas, so please don’t get me on a technicality with that one.
If you use an angel, this idea would work for that too. Even any type of Christmas decoration.
Supplies Needed: Christmas tree with star or angel

Super Easy Elf on the Shelf Idea: Movie Time!
This is one of my laziest (and best) elf hacks. Grab the remote and pour some popcorn (I always have some prepackaged in the pantry for snacks).
Then settle your elf in for a binge-watch. It’s quick, cozy, and a no-fuss Elf on the Shelf idea for tired moms.
Supplies Needed: TV, remote and small container of popcorn

It’s an Elf Party!
It doesn’t get easier than this. Clearly, you have children if you’re reading this article.
Grab their plushies and soft teddies, place them all together with your elf and you have a party! This has to be one of the easiest last minute Elf on the Shelf ideas ever.
To really get the party started, if you have any party props like streamers, party poppers, balloons, curling ribbon, glitter, etc., place them with the party guests.
Supplies Needed: Plushies and party decorations (streamers, party poppers etc)

Mission Impossible Easy Elf on the Shelf Idea
Got ribbon, string, or twine? Dangle your elf from the ceiling like they’re sneaking into a top-secret mission.
The kids will love it, and the older ones may even get it. Bonus points if you hum the theme tune while setting it up.
Supplies Needed: Rope, ribbon or twine

Elf Looking for Loce
So so simple. This truly is an easy last minute Elf on the Shelf idea! I simply sat my elf in front of the laptop, after he had googled “girl elf on the shelf” in Google images.
You can do the same for an ipad/tablet or phone too.
Supplies Needed: Computer or tablet

The Classic Elf on the Shelf… Driving
In this picture, I have our Elf driving the car. I feel like I could really go a lot further with this one.
With a kiddo on the spectrum who (obsessively) loves, love loves cars, I’ll be setting myself the challenge of making more car-related Elf on the Shelf ideas next time!
Supplies Needed: Car (not a toy one, an actual car haha)

Magic Invisible Ink Letter
Our Elf used a gold pen (since they’re more magical than others) and some black card to write this letter. You wouldn’t need to go to that extent, just use what you have on hand.
The idea is to write a letter that only the kids can read. Within the letter, the Elf tells them their parents will be doing something special for them.
Since I was under Elf magic I had no idea and made my children pancakes and ice cream for dinner that night. My boys really loved this concept!
Supplies Needed: Paper/Card and a pen

Ribbon Last Minute Elf on the Shelf Idea
Okay, so I called this ‘locking my children in’ but you don’t have to! I used crepe paper and blue-tac it to the door frame but you could use any type of ribbon or string.
Supplies Needed: Paper streamers or ribbon
