Create some fun this Crazy Hair Day with some Minion crazy hair! It’s perfect for boys, those who don’t have a lot of hair, or if you’re just looking for a simple solution.
You can also easily adjust this project to make the purple Minion crazy hair or a two-eyed Minion.
When it comes to creating crazy hair, I always like to be as prepared as I can be, prior to the day.
Given this is always a school fundraiser for us, combining the chaos of the morning school rush with perfecting crazy hair just adds more to the chaos!
I don’t have time for perfecting hairstyles (especially since I’m terrible at doing my own!). So using clips and attachments works really well.
With this Minion crazy hair project, all I needed to do was add color to my son’s hair the morning of the big day.

Step 1: Painting the Minion Eye

It is best to prepare your Minion hair project at least one day before your Crazy Hair Day.
We begin with the eye of your Minion hair. I used a 3.5″ but 4″ would do just fine too.
Paint half of the styrofoam ball yellow (Image 1 above). You can wait until the paint is dry or keep going to the next step.
I placed a skewer in my styrofoam ball and stuck it through the base of a paper cup. This way I could get more work done without getting paint everywhere!
Next, paint a quarter of the remaining white section yellow (Image 2 above). This will be your Minion’s eyelid.
For the colored iris, I used brown as Stuart the Minion’s eye is brown (Image 3 above). You can, of course, paint it whatever color you have handy or if you’re creating a different character for your Minion crazy hair.
As I didn’t have any brown paint, I used red, blue, and yellow to mix my own.
You can now use black paint to paint the pupil (Image 4 above).
I tried to make it so my Minion is glancing sideways. But I think I just made it look as though I can’t paint in the center! What do you think?
Once the paint had dried, I went back and repainted the brown iris as it looked a bit streaky. But that’s entirely up to you. I was just being fussy.
Step 2: Create the Goggles

For the goggle band, I used a piece of ribbon however you could just as easily attach a black pipe cleaner with your hot glue gun.
If using ribbon, estimate the length needed to go around half the styrofoam ball (don’t worry about being exact!). I cut a piece roughly 6 inches/15 cm long.
Secure the ribbon halfway around the painted eye with the adhesive tape runner.

Next, for the frame of Stuart’s goggles, cut a piece of aluminum foil. Mine was approximately 6″ wide by 16″ long but the size will vary depending on your styrofoam ball.
Don’t worry too much about being neat with the cut, as you’ll be folding it in.
Fold both long edges of the foil towards the middle, creating a smooth center. Fold the entire piece in half again (Image 1 above).
Now to attach the frame, wrap the folded foil around the Styrofoam ball. Secure it with the tape runner (Image 2 above).
Trim any excess and fold a small section of the end under before securing it with more tape (Image 3 above).
Step 3: Attach the Clip

Now we’re going to attach the clip to the Minion eyeball. You may need to test it’s positioning with your child’s hair.
I chose this type of clip because it was rounded. It suited the ball and fit snuggly into the round shape.
I didn’t attach my clip to the base or at a 90° angle. This is why I did a quick test with my son’s hair and where the eyeball will sit.
Using a hot glue gun attach the clip at a 45° angle to the Styrofoam ball and leave it to dry. Make sure you apply plenty around the outside base of the clip too, to ensure it stays stuck.

Step 4: Coloring the Hair
It’s here! It’s all so exciting and your Minion crazy hair is going to look awesome! My kids are always so excited to get to school to see everybody else’s hair and show off their own on Crazy Hair Day.
When it comes to assembling your Minion hair, you first need to dye your child’s hair yellow. I bought two of these dye kits from Amazon.
At the time I wasn’t sure what we were doing for Crazy Hair Day so having the additional colors was okay (plus I can use them another time). I also used the green for my other son’s soccer field hair. I’ll post the details about that soon!
I did use two tubes of yellow dye on my son’s hair which basically covered his whole head. It’s likely you will need that much too. However, it does depend on several factors and you may be able to get away with just one tube.
Because my children’s hair is quite dark, I really layered a lot on. I could have even used more. Cutting his hair shorter would definitely have helped to reduce the amount I needed.
Also, consider how old your child is. For my soccer field crazy hair project, my oldest son is 10 although he is the size of a 14-year-old. His head is bigger than that of a three-year-old so there was more ground to cover!
Given my kid’s hair is so dark it’s really difficult to get vibrant colors so I really liked using these. Next time I’ll definitely make sure that we’ve got our haircut nice and short.
Follow the directions on the packaging to apply to your child’s hair (for adult application only!).
Once you’ve finished adding the color to your child’s hair, you can dry and seal it with a hair dryer. I actually skipped this part, I was in a rush and figured it would dry soon enough.
It turns out you should read the instructions on these things (like drying the hair)! But in all seriousness, please do make sure you read the instructions.

Assembling Your Minion Crazy Hair
Once you have dyed the hair, simply clip the minion eyeball to a clump of hair. I did have hair product to spike it with however I found that I didn’t need it. The color kept it spikey enough which helped to hold the eyeball clip in place.
I know many parents are getting their kid’s crazy hair ready before school so timing is very important.
Overall it took me about 15 minutes to dye his hair (not allowing for drying). Then just a few more minutes to put the eyeball in and secure the way that I liked. Then voila! Crazy minion hair!

Tips for Making Minion Crazy Hair
- Keep it Trim: Have a haircut beforehand for easy dye coverage and faster results.
- Estimating Dye Amount: Elements that will affect how much dye you need include: the age of the child (smaller head means less dye); the length of hair; and the natural color of the hair (darker hair tends to need more dye).
- Dye Alternative: You can use a colored hair spray or colored hair chalk. For sensitive skin, skip the dye and spike your hair, then clip in your Minion eyeball.
- Prepare in Advance: Make the Minion eye clip ahead of time to save time during the morning rush.
- Double the Fun: Create a two-eyed Minion by repeating the eye-making process with 2 smaller Styrofoam balls. You can even use a separate hair clip for each eye!
- Purple Minion Alternative: Simply use a purple hair dye (one or two eyes)!
- Minimize the Mess: Lay down newspaper or have a bag handy to discard messy hair coloring supplies.
- Additional Gloves: I switched out for a new set of clean disposable gloves three times to avoid mess going everywhere, especially on the eyeball.
- Clean Up Crew: Have cleaning wipes on hand to quickly remove any dye mishaps.
- Protect Your Clothes: Use a towel to cover your child’s shoulders to avoid getting dye on their clothes.
