If you’re looking for a fun little project to brighten your day (and possibly your kitchen, windowsill, or the entire playroom), then this sunflower paper craft is about to be your new bestie.
It’s cheerful, low-mess, and totally doable – even if your last craft ended with glitter in your coffee and pom-poms glued to the dog.
This sweet paper sunflower is perfect for a rainy-day activity, classroom art, or even a crafternoon with your little sidekick.
Bonus: it doubles as instant sunflower decor – no watering required and perfect for those dark corners of the house that real plants wouldn’t thrive.
Supplies You’ll Need

Before we begin making sunflowers, here’s your quick supply round-up. No complicated materials or a trip to the fancy craft store necessary:
- Yellow Paper
- Black Paper
- Green Paper
- Glue Stick
- Scissors
- Green Straws or Rolled Green Paper
How to Make Paper Sunflowers
Step 1: Prep the Sunflower Petals
Cut two rectangles of yellow paper, approximately 4” x 8” (10 x 20 cm). These are going to be your sunflower petals.

Step 2: Make the Flower Shape
Fold each yellow piece back and forth like a paper fan (image 1 below).
Fold the fan in half to create a semi-circle and glue the ends together (image 2 below).
Repeat with the second piece and glue both halves to form a full circle (image 3 below). You now have the base of your paper sunflower!

Step 3: Make the Flower Center
Cut a circle from black paper. Add a woven pattern using narrow paper strips or washi tape to mimic sunflower seeds (or skip the weaving if you’re short on time or patience – still adorable).
Glue the black circle center to your yellow flower base – that’s some fine sunflower DIY magic happening right there!

Step 4: Craft the Leaves & Stem
Cut leaf shapes from green paper. Give them a concertina fold like we did with the sunflower petals. Then fold down the middle to create a natural shape.
Roll up a strip of green paper or grab a green paper straw to make your sunflower stem. Attach the flowers to your stem.

Step 5: Show it Off
Now you just need to glue the stem to the back of the flower.
That’s it! You’re done. Now go ahead and give yourself a high-five.

Creative Ways to Use Your Sunflower Paper Craft
Don’t stop at just one! Here are some delightful ways to turn this simple sunflower craft into something extra:
Build a Paper Sunflower Bouquet
Make a bunch and arrange them in a jar or vase for a sweet little sunflower bouquet. Perfect for gifting or perking up the kitchen counter.
Use for Sunflower Decor
Glue your flowers to wooden dowels and pop them in a potted plant or flower box. They’ll stay cheery even when your real plants forget to thrive.
Turn it into Easy Art for Kids
Mount the flowers on cardboard and let your kids create a whole sunflower field scene. Add clouds, bugs, and a rainbow.
Add to Party Decor
Sunflower birthday party? Baby shower? Just celebrating the fact that you survived Monday?
These make the cutest DIY party accents. Tape them to the wall, dangle them from string, or pop one at each place setting.
Fun Sunflower Craft Variations
If you’re feeling inspired and want to mix things up, try these fun swaps:
- Use patterned paper for extra flair (polka dot petals, anyone?)
- Add a popsicle stick for a mini puppet version
