Fun swimming pool games for kids are the perfect way to make your summer gatherings unforgettable!
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, hosting a casual hangout, or just want to keep the kids entertained, these swimming pool party games will keep everyone cool and ensure the fun lasts for hours.
I remember being a kid and absolutely loving summer – we spent day after day in the pool with our friends.
I know many people who share the same beautiful, cherished memories of warm summers splashing by the pool.
Pool play gives kids freedom and encourages them to just be themselves.
Oh the hours of free play they’ll have. And those hangry kiddos when they finally pull themselves away because they’re simply starving.
But just quickly because then it’s back to the pool!

Swimming Pool Games for Kids Guide
Planning Fun Pool Party Games for Kids
Many of the suggestions here don’t require any equipment at all. And the equipment needed is something most pool owners have.
I do have to mention one of my favorite finds in a long time has been the waterproof case for your phone. This is a far more affordable option for a waterproof camera. If you’re looking to get some underwater shots of your party, you should check it out.
In terms of planning your party timeline, let’s say the average kid’s party lasts 2 hours. I would allocate the following for your pool games:
- 15 – 20 Minutes: Free Play: Allow the kids to get comfortable. This also allows for late arrivals.
- 30 – 45 Minutes: Organized Games: Depending on the ages of your kids, allow for 3-5 games approximately 5-10 minutes each.
- 15 – 20 Minutes: Free Swim: Give the kids a break from structured games and allow them to enjoy the pool (and each other!) at their own pace.
- Remaining Time: Cake & Food: You know they’ll be hungry, so make sure you have some snacks ready to go! This is also a good time for any other activities or gift opening.
This really only scratches the surface of planning a kid’s pool party. Would you like to know more? Comment below to let me know!

Swimming Pool Games to Suit Your Party Theme
Modifying your pool games to suit your party theme will elevate the fun! Check out these ideas below. Even if your pool party doesn’t fit one of these themes, they’ll inspire you to get creative with your own unique twist!
Mermaid Pool Party
- Mermaid Races: Keep the game as is, or add mermaid costumes and obstacles like “swimming through seaweed” (floating pool noodles) or “dodging sea creatures” (balloons or floating objects).
- Shark Attack: Transform the “shark” into a “sea monster” (like the Kraken or a giant octopus). The “minnows” become mermaids trying to avoid being tagged by the sea monster and reach a safe “coral reef” on the other side.
- Bubble Whisperer: Turn this into a “Mermaid Whisperer” challenge where one player goes underwater and whispers a mermaid phrase like “Find the hidden pearl!” while blowing bubbles. The others guess the phrase, related to mermaid adventures or underwater creatures.
Pirate Pool Party
- Pirate’s Plunder: Keep the name as is, or modify it into a treasure hunt where kids, as pirates, search for “gold coins” (pool toys) and jewels (colored balls).
- Pirate Hide-and-Seek: Instead of Marco Polo, the “Marco” player becomes the pirate captain, and the others hide as they sail. When the captain yells “Ahoy!”, players respond with “Aye, Aye!” instead of “Polo.”
- Cannonball Battle: Rename this classic as “Cannonball Battle,” where pirates dodge water balloons (or water bombs). The last pirate standing without being hit by a cannonball wins!
Cowboy Pool Party
- Cowboy Duel: Instead of pool noodle jousting, players use pool noodles as “lassos” or “duel sticks” to knock their opponent off their “horse” (floating ring or mat). The last cowboy standing wins.
- Rodeo Rope Pull: Cowboys use a long rope or noodle to pull the opposing team across the “corral” (middle line of the pool). The first team to cross the line loses, like a cowboy tug-of-war.
- Cowboy Hop: Refresh this game as “Cowboy Hop,” where kids jump over fellow cowboys as they race across the pool, mimicking cowboy moves or jumping over obstacles like hay bales or fences made of pool floats.

I’ve included some suggestions for age appropriateness. However, these are just a guide, so please use your discretion.
